When you want to move forward

Things are good, but I don't know how to enjoy it

My friend, things are going well, and still you can't enjoy them. It's as if you're waiting for something to break, as though joy were a debt to be paid later. Many of us learned that it's safer not to be too glad, so the fall won't hurt. But that fear protects you from nothing. It only steals the good day you have now. Joy is not recklessness. It is the way you receive what you've been given. It doesn't have to be big. It's enough to stop for a moment and let it in.

Questions for you

  1. What is good in my life right now?

A possible answerName concrete things: some health, a person, a quiet, a success. Often the good is there, it just passes by unseen.

  2. What do I think will happen if I fully enjoy it?

A possible answerMaybe that life will punish you, maybe that others will judge you. These are old fears. Today's joy doesn't summon tomorrow's trouble.

  3. How can I pause for ten seconds in a good moment?

A possible answerWhen you feel something good, stop and notice: what you see, what your body feels, who you're with. Ten seconds of attention help the memory take root.

  4. Whom can I share the good with?

A possible answerJoy told to someone grows. A message, a meal, good news shared. It isn't bragging. It's a flame passed on.

Tonight's practice

Tonight, write three good things from today and, beside each, why it happened. Read them slowly, once.

A thought to keep

“Don't save the fire for a better day. Warm yourself today.”

By the Fire print: Don't save the fire for a better day. Warm yourself today. I let myself be glad, now.
