When you want to move forward

I want to start something and I don't dare

My friend, the dream has sat on a shelf in your mind for a long time, and each time you approach it you find a reason to wait: it's not the moment, you don't know enough, what will people say. The moment without any doubt may never come. You don't have to wait until you're no longer afraid. You can start while trembling. You don't have to jump into the water. You can walk in step by step. The first step is always the smallest and, strangely, the hardest.

Questions for you

  1. What is the smallest version of what I want to start?

A possible answerNot the café, but a cake sold to friends. Not the book, but a page a week. The small version shows you whether you like the road.

  2. What does it cost me to wait another year?

A possible answerWe wait while counting only the risk of trying. Weigh the risk of not trying too: another year with the same unspoken wish.

  3. Who has already done something similar and could advise me?

A possible answerPeople who have walked that road usually enjoy talking about it. A coffee with someone who started before you makes the fear clearer and smaller.

  4. What would I do if it went badly?

A possible answerYou'd learn, get up, try differently or try something else. A plan for failure doesn't invite failure. It gives you permission to dare.

Tonight's practice

Put one hour in your calendar this week for the first step. Write exactly what you'll do in that hour. Then do it, even if you're afraid.

A thought to keep

“You can start while trembling. The fire doesn't ask whether the hand is steady.”

By the Fire print: You can start while trembling. The fire doesn't ask whether the hand is steady. I start small. I start today.
