When it hurts
I miss someone who left
My friend, the house is the same, but there is an empty place in it, and you trip over it ten times a day. Your hand reaches for the phone to tell them something, then remembers. It does not hurt because you are weak. You grew used to a person, and a habit like that does not come undone in one evening. It comes apart thread by thread. Your mind will mostly show you the good moments, like chosen photographs. They were real. They were not the whole truth. Let yourself miss them without running after them.
Questions for you
What do I truly miss: this person, or the way I felt beside them?
A possible answerMaybe both. Sometimes we miss the person. Sometimes we miss a part of ourselves that only woke up around them: the lightness, the courage, the calm. That part did not leave with them. You can look for it in other places too.
What exactly makes me check my phone again?
A possible answerOften not hope, but habit and the fear of silence. The hand looks for a sign that the bond is not completely broken. That is human. Each time you don't check, you gently undo one more thread.
What would I tell a friend going through exactly this?
A possible answerYou would probably tell them it hurts because they loved, that there is nothing to be ashamed of, and that it will pass. Try telling yourself the same words, in the same voice.
What can I do today just for me, with no link to this person?
A possible answerSomething small that belongs to you: a walk down a new street, a book, a meal cooked only for you. Your life now begins in small things that no longer pass through the other person.
Tonight's practice
Write them a letter you will not send. Say everything you never got to say. Then fold the page and put it in a drawer. Don't throw it away, don't send it. Just let it have a place.
A thought to keep
