When people hurt you
Something in my family hurts me
My friend, family is where we learned our first words, and sometimes also where we received our first wounds. You can love the people in your family and, at the same time, find them hard. That is not a betrayal. It is the truth of many homes. You cannot change what they did, but you can choose what you carry forward: what you keep, what you leave behind, how close you stand. Sometimes loving means coming often. Sometimes it means coming rarely, but whole.
Questions for you
What do I expect from them that they may not be able to give?
A possible answerSometimes we wait for recognition, an apology, a warmth those people simply don't have to give. Accepting that hurts, but it frees you from an endless wait.
What good did I receive from them, even amid the hard things?
A possible answerA habit, a strength, a way of working, a laugh. Seeing the good doesn't erase the wounds. It simply helps you not carry everything on your shoulders.
How close can I stand without losing myself?
A possible answerMaybe a shorter visit, topics you no longer open, an hour of quiet afterwards. The right distance can save a bond.
Which family pattern do I not want to pass on?
A possible answerThe silence, the shouting, the fear of showing love. Seeing it is already the start of change. You can be the person in your family where a wound stops.
Tonight's practice
Write a letter to your family that you won't send, in two parts: “What I received” and “What I leave here”. Keep it a while, then decide whether to burn it or keep it.
A thought to keep
“You can love from near or from far. Both are love.”
