When your body speaks

I don't like how I look

My friend, the mirror has become a judge, and photographs have become evidence. You look at yourself piece by piece and always find something to reproach. But this body is not a stage set. It is the house where you have lived every joy so far: the hands that embraced, the legs that carried you, the eyes that saw the sea. The beauty on screens is often worked on until it is no longer true. You don't have to love every part of yourself overnight. It is enough to stop speaking to yourself like an enemy.

Questions for you

  1. What does my body do for me every day?

A possible answerIt breathes without being asked, heals, carries you, feels the warmth of a hand. When you see what it does, not only how it looks, your relationship with it slowly changes.

  2. Where did I learn to look at myself this way?

A possible answerMaybe from a comment heard in childhood, maybe from magazines and filters. This way of looking was learned. Anything learned can slowly be unlearned.

  3. Which accounts make me feel worse after I see them?

A possible answerNotice them for a week. Instead, you can follow people with ordinary bodies living good lives. What you see often becomes your measure.

  4. What would I do today if I stopped waiting to look different?

A possible answerMaybe the swim you've put off, the clothes forgotten in the wardrobe, a photo with the people you love. Life doesn't begin after your body changes. It's now.

Tonight's practice

Stand in front of the mirror for a moment and name three things your body did for you this week. Say nothing about how it looks.

A thought to keep

“Your body is not a shop window. It is the house where the fire burns.”
