By the Fire

When people hurt you

Someone I trusted betrayed me

My friend, it isn't only the act that hurts. It hurts that part of the past changed all at once: the good memories now carry a shadow, and you wonder what was real. It also hurts to think you should have seen it. But trust is not foolishness. It is a gift you gave with an open heart, and the one who misused it carries the weight of that choice, not you. You don't have to decide today whether to forgive or leave. Today it is enough to be safe, to take time, and not to close your heart to everyone because of one person.

Questions for you

  1. What was still true in what I lived?

A possible answerNot everything was ruined. What you felt was real. Your joys were real, even if the other person was hiding something. Don't let today's act steal your whole past.

  2. What do I need right now to feel safe?

A possible answerMaybe distance, maybe a talk with someone neutral, maybe no decisions for a while. Safety comes before explanations and before forgiveness.

  3. Am I blaming myself for someone else's choice?

A possible answerIt's a common reflex: it feels easier to believe we got it wrong than to accept we had no control. But the choice was theirs.

  4. Whom can I still trust now, even a little?

A possible answerYou don't have to trust anyone all at once. Choose someone who has proven themselves over time and let trust grow again, step by step, like a fire rekindled.

Tonight's practice

Write down three people who have never let you down. Choose one and spend an hour together this week, without necessarily talking about what happened.

A thought to keep

“One person does not put out every fire.”
