When it hurts
I lost someone I love
My friend, I will not tell you that everything happens for a reason. Not now. For now I will only sit down beside you. Outside, the world keeps going, people laugh in the shop, and it feels unfair that they can. Nothing is wrong with you. Grief keeps no schedule and does not walk in a straight line. One day you are fine, the next a smell or a song brings you to your knees. This is how longing works for someone who meant this much. You do not have to get over it. It is enough to go through it, slowly, with someone beside you.
Questions for you
Who can I tell today, honestly, how hard this is?
A possible answerIt doesn't have to be the closest person. It can be someone who has lived through something similar, a priest, a therapist, a kind neighbour. You don't need advice. You need someone who is in no hurry to calm you down.
Which memory do I want to keep alive?
A possible answerPick a small, true one: a gesture, a saying, a habit. Write it down with every detail. Memories keep better when we say them out loud.
Where does the guilt come from when I laugh again, even for a moment?
A possible answerMany people feel that joy would be a betrayal. It is not. Laughter does not erase love. The one you lost would not have wanted you to carry grief like a debt.
What do I need to get through tomorrow?
A possible answerNot a whole life without them. Only tomorrow: who can call you, what you will eat, where you can go out for ten minutes. Grief is carried one day at a time.
Tonight's practice
Tonight, light a candle or a small lamp for your person. Sit beside it for five minutes and say, silently or out loud, one thing they taught you.
A thought to keep
“Someone you love is not forgotten. They only learn to sit more quietly inside you.”
