When your mind won't let you rest
At night, the thoughts won't stop
My friend, it is late and your mind has started the night shift. It takes every worry, turns it over and over, and solves none of them. Nothing in you is broken. It is a tired mind that believes it will be safe if it only thinks hard enough. But night is not the hour for decisions. What looks enormous at three in the morning returns to its true size in daylight.
Questions for you
Can I do anything about this thought right now, tonight?
A possible answerIf yes, take one small step and write it down. If not, the thought does not need you until morning. Postponing it is not ignoring it. It is putting it in its place.
Is this thought helping me solve something, or just going in circles?
A possible answerIf the same question keeps coming back with no new step, that is churning, not thinking. The mind mistakes worrying for caring. You can tell it: “I heard you. We'll come back to this tomorrow at ten.”
What is my body feeling right now?
A possible answerTight shoulders, clenched jaw, short breath? Thoughts settle more easily when the body settles first. Breathe out longer than you breathe in, a few times in a row.
What would I see differently if it were ten in the morning?
A possible answerProbably the same problem, but smaller and with a plan. Night makes everything bigger, because tiredness and silence make it look like there is no way out.
Tonight's practice
Write down everything that weighs on you, in no order. Underneath, write: “Tomorrow, in the light.” Put the paper far from your bed.
A thought to keep
“Night weighs everything heavy. Leave the scales for morning.”
