When your mind won't let you rest

I'm afraid of what comes next

My friend, you stand on the threshold of a change, and your mind draws every way it could go wrong. You see them clearly, like a film. The ways it could go well you do not see at all, because fear does not screen them. It does not lie to you entirely, but it shows you only half the story. Remember the other thresholds you crossed while trembling. Each time you reached the other side, even if not the way you planned. Someone who has come through so much is not someone without strength.

Questions for you

  1. What is the next small step, just one, that I would take even while afraid?

A possible answerA step so small it seems almost silly: an email, a call, a question. Calm rarely arrives before the step. More often it arrives after.

  2. If what scares me did happen, who would I call first?

A possible answerOnce you have a name and a first step, fear loses some of its power. You don't have to carry it all without help. You already have people and resources, even if fear hides them from you.

  3. How much of my fear is about now, and how much about what happened once?

A possible answerSometimes something frightens us today because it hurt us long ago. It is worth asking: does today really look like back then? Often you are someone else now, with more strength.

  4. What might this change bring me if it goes well?

A possible answerFear only shows you the way down. Let yourself imagine the way up too, in the same detail. Both are possible.

Tonight's practice

Write down three hard thresholds you have already crossed. Beside each, note what helped you then. Read the list before you sleep.

A thought to keep

“You have crossed thresholds trembling before. The trembling never stopped you.”

By the Fire print: You have crossed thresholds trembling before. The trembling never stopped you. I can take a small step, even while afraid.
