By the Fire

When work weighs on you

Money worries are suffocating me

My friend, the bills sit on the table like stones, and the numbers spin in your head day and night. Money worry is not only about money. It is about safety, about the shame of not coping, about fear for the people you love. Many people go through this in silence, believing they are the only ones. They are not. Fear grows bigger in fog, so the first step is not to solve everything, but to see clearly: what comes in, what goes out, what is urgent. A problem written on paper can be broken into pieces.

Questions for you

  1. What exactly is the number that scares me?

A possible answerWrite it down. Often fear without a number is bigger than the real amount. With a number in front of you, you can make a plan.

  2. What is urgent this week and what can wait?

A possible answerRent, food, electricity and medicine come first. Many debts can be spread out if you call before you fall behind. The people you owe prefer a conversation to silence.

  3. Whom can I ask, without shame?

A possible answerA friend who's good with money, a free debt adviser, your bank, a social service. Shame keeps you in the fog. Asking brings you out of it.

  4. What brings me calm and costs nothing?

A possible answerA walk, a library book, an evening with a friend, sleep. Money worry tries to take everything. Keep a few things that aren't for sale.

Tonight's practice

Tonight, write on a single page everything that comes in and goes out in a month. Circle one thing you can do tomorrow. Just one.

A thought to keep
