When you've lost your way

I don't know what I want from my life

My friend, everyone seems to have a map, and you stand at a crossroads without a single signpost. You wonder what is wrong with you. Nothing is. Few people know their road in advance. Most find it by walking. The answer rarely comes from standing still and thinking harder. It comes from small things tried, from what makes you forget the clock, and from what leaves you empty afterwards. Do not wait for the great calling. Look for the next thing that pulls at you, however small, and follow it for a while.

Questions for you

  1. When did I last forget the clock? What was I doing?

A possible answerThat's a trace. Not necessarily a job, but a way of working: with your hands, with people, with ideas, in quiet or in motion. Follow the way, not the label.

  2. What would I try if no one would judge me?

A possible answerThis answer often shows what you truly want, beneath what you think is expected of you. You don't have to do it tomorrow. Just stop hiding it from yourself.

  3. Whose dreams am I trying to live?

A possible answerSometimes we chase what our parents, our friends or the world on the screen wanted. It is fine to thank them and choose something else. Your life is not a debt you owe anyone.

  4. What small trial could I run this month?

A possible answerAn evening class, a day of volunteering, a talk with someone who does what draws you. You aren't choosing a life, you're running a trial. Small trials say more than big thoughts.

Tonight's practice

Draw two columns on a page: “Fills me” and “Drains me”. Sort what you did this week into them. Draw no conclusions. Just notice what gathers.

A thought to keep

“You can't see the road from the crossroads. You see it by walking.”
